The AFC develops the skills needed to join the Army's front-line fighting forces or prepares students for an apprenticeship in a technical trade. AFC students are paid the full junior soldier's wage and are guaranteed a job in the Army. The qualifications gained while training at AFC are widely recognised by civilian employers.

Ranked 3rd in the DfES A Level league table for standards of excellence, it provides A Level education and a route into an officer career with the Armed Forces. Welbeck students study a science and mathematics based A-Level syllabus. Successful completion of exams guarantees financial sponsorship to undertake a degree in engineering or science and, subsequently, a place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). After completing RMAS, officer cadets are commissioned into one of the Army's engineering or technical Corps.

Applications are invited from British, Commonwealth and Irish Subjects aged between 15 years and 17 years and six months on 1 September in the year of entry to the college. Applicants must have at least five GCSEs, including maths and science, at grades A and B (or equivalent qualifications).

Candidates with A Levels and graduates who join the Army as officer cadets receive managerial and leadership training that is second to none. Initial officer training takes place at RMAS and covers basic soldiering, command tasks, leadership, managerial and interpersonal skills training. Training continues throughout an officer's career. Officers develop strong leadership and management skills including the art of problem solving which involves consulting, assessing, planning, negotiating and motivating soldiers to implement effective solutions.
Gap Year Commission (GYC) provides students with training at a short course at RMAS, followed by 4-18 months with a unit, giving them experience as an officer without any obligation to join the Army on completion of the course. The GYC offers a salary of £14,297 to £15,604 pa.

Army Undergraduate Bursaries provide an annual award for first degree courses at university and a further lump sum on entry to RMAS. Candidates who pass the commissioning course will serve as an officer after completing officer training at RMAS. Nursing and Veterinary Bursaries are also available. The typical value of an undergraduate bursary is £6,000 for a three year course.

Medical Cadetships provide grants for up to 70 Medical and eight Dental Cadetships each year, which are worth approximately £50,000 each.

The Job: Whether you join as an officer or a soldier your newly acquired professional skills and individual talents are put to immediate use, exercising a level of responsibility and responding to demands unmatched by other jobs, forging motivated and successful teams. Teamwork is vital to the Army's success on exercises and operations; whether adventure training in the jungles of Belize, delivering aid in Bosnia, peacekeeping in Sierra Leone or on wider general military operations. Sport and adventure is valued for developing individual strength of character and team spirit therefore the Army encourages sport and adventurous training, including traditional sports like football, athletics and rugby and adventurous activities such as diving, snowboarding and climbing. The value of these experiences and your qualifications is attractive to other employers when you eventually decide to leave the Army.

The Army is a great place for motivated young people to make friends, have an active social and sporting life and gain experience, education and training.
