POST GCSE OPPORTUNITIES
Education Grants for Post GCSE Students: Army Education Grants
of up to £3,000 are available to students studying A-levels/Highers
or their vocational equivalent in science, maths, languages,
engineering, construction and built environment, vehicle maintenance
and catering.
Education Grants are available
to students who wish to join the Army as a soildier after
gaining their educational qualifications. Students can apply
for a grant of £1,500 per year for study towards A-levels
or their vocational equivalent (eg BTEC, AVCE, NVQ3) and £1,000
per year for study at higher education level. Students who
have completed part of their course may also apply for a grant
provided they have at least one further academic year's study
to complete.
Army Foundation College: 16-17
year olds can go straight into the Army Foundation College
(AFC). The AFC develops the skills needed to join the Army's
front-line fighting forces or prepares students for an apprenticeship
in a technical trade. AFC students are paid the full junior
soldier's wage and are guaranteed a job in the Army. The qualifications
gained while training at AFC are widely recognised by civilian
employers.
"Golden Hellos"
for Army Technical Trades: The Golden Hello scheme is open
to applicants wishing to join the Army as a soilder. Applicants
must have completed GCSE to degree level study in specified
subjects including maths, science, languages, engineering,
construction and built environment, vehicle maintenance and
catering, and wish to join one of the more technical trades
in the Army. Trades include Chef, Vehicle Mechanic and Linguist.
The value of the Golden Hellos range from £500 to £8,000
depending on the applicant's qualifications and their Army
job. Training and development continues on the job, providing
more valuable qualifications and experience.
Welbeck - The Defence Sixth
Form College is the country's leading co-educational sixth
form residential college. Ranked 3rd in the DfES A Level league
table for standards of excellence, it provides A Level education
and a route into an officer career with the Armed Forces.
Welbeck students study a science and mathematics based A-Level
syllabus. Successful completion of exams guarantees financial
sponsorship to undertake a degree in engineering or science
and, subsequently, a place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
(RMAS). After completing RMAS, officer cadets are commissioned
into one of the Army's engineering or technical Corps.
Applications are invited from
British, Commonwealth and Irish Subjects aged between 15 years
and 17 years and six months on 1 September in the year of
entry to the college. Applicants must have at least five GCSEs,
including maths and science, at grades A and B (or equivalent
qualifications).

POST A LEVEL OPPORTUNITIES
Officer Opportunities: About 85% of officer entrants are graduates
but many vacancies exist for those with A Levels or for commission
from prior service as soldiers. Candidates with A Levels and
graduates who join the Army as officer cadets receive managerial
and leadership training that is second to none. Initial officer
training takes place at RMAS and covers basic soldiering, command
tasks, leadership, managerial and interpersonal skills training.
Training continues throughout an officer's career. Officers
develop strong leadership and management skills including the
art of problem solving which involves consulting, assessing,
planning, negotiating and motivating soldiers to implement effective
solutions.
Gap Year Commission (GYC) provides students with training at
a short course at RMAS, followed by 4-18 months with a unit,
giving them experience as an officer without any obligation
to join the Army on completion of the course. The GYC offers
a salary of £14,297 to £15,604 pa. |

Army Undergraduate Bursaries
provide an annual award for first degree courses at university
and a further lump sum on entry to RMAS. Candidates who pass
the commissioning course will serve as an officer after completing
officer training at RMAS. Nursing and Veterinary Bursaries
are also available. The typical value of an undergraduate
bursary is £6,000 for a three year course.
Medical Cadetships provide
grants for up to 70 Medical and eight Dental Cadetships each
year, which are worth approximately £50,000 each.
Undergraduate Army Placement
- UGAP offers students who are required to do a placement
year at university, a one year placement as an Army Officer,
with a pay scale of £14,297 to £15,604 pa. Students
are under no obligation to join the Army at the end of their
UGAP experience.
The Job: Whether you join
as an officer or a soldier your newly acquired professional
skills and individual talents are put to immediate use, exercising
a level of responsibility and responding to demands unmatched
by other jobs, forging motivated and successful teams. Teamwork
is vital to the Army's success on exercises and operations;
whether adventure training in the jungles of Belize, delivering
aid in Bosnia, peacekeeping in Sierra Leone or on wider general
military operations. Sport and adventure is valued for developing
individual strength of character and team spirit therefore
the Army encourages sport and adventurous training, including
traditional sports like football, athletics and rugby and
adventurous activities such as diving, snowboarding and climbing.
The value of these experiences and your qualifications is
attractive to other employers when you eventually decide to
leave the Army.
