Flexible training At TVU

The Faculty of Health and Human Sciences was developed from Schools of nursing brought together in 1994 to form the Wolfson Institute of Health Sciences within Thames Valley University. In 1995 the Institute merged with Berkshire College. The coming together of these schools and colleges resulted in Thames Valley University becoming one of the largest providers of Nursing and Midwifery programmes in the country.

The Faculty offers a unique BSc (Hons) /Advanced Diploma/Diploma in Nursing, this programme offers flexible exit points for students dependent on their entry level and/ or their performance in the first two years of the programme. Students can exit at Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree level according to their own efforts. The syllabus will be similar for all three with the academic level of year three being the main difference. All three levels prepare students to register as nurses on successful completion of the programme.

Programme Summary
The programme is in two parts. In the Common Foundation Programme (year One), you are introduced to the theory and practice of nursing in the context of the current health service. Branch Programme, modules in the Branch Programme (years two and three) further build upon learning which has taken place in the Common Foundation Programme and provide the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills to the chosen branch (Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disability or Child Health) and prepare for future professional roles.

Fifty per cent of the programme is spent in practice; students are given opportunities to learn about the role of the nurse in diverse areas in
order to ensure competence and confidence on completion of the programme.

Students are expected to experience twenty-four hour care including some weekends nd a short period of night duty in year three. This programme prepares students to work as registered nurses in one of the following areas: adult health, child health, mental health or learning disabilities.

Programme Specification
The programme is offered at the TVU campus in Ealing or in Slough, Berkshire. However, the teaching and the practice experiences will take place in a variety of hospital and community settings.

Length of programme
The length of the Programme is three years with start dates in Autumn and Spring each year. A variety of Learning and Teaching approaches will be used in the programme. 'Enquiry based learning' and 'learning in practice' are the two main methods. All students are provided with help to learn the skills of learning within the Learning Skills Development Scheme. Additional supports Tutorials are arranged if the student requires help with their studies. The aim is to provide a supportive environment, to help students' achieve their academic and professional goals.

Assessment methods
Students are continuously assessed. Each module has a theoretical and practical component and are each summatively assessed. A variety of assessment strategies are used and are designed to enable the student to apply their knowledge and understanding of the evidence which supports and underpins nursing practice.
