Oxford University
Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and lays claim to nine centuries of continuous existence. As an internationally renowned centre for teaching and research, Oxford attracts students and scholars from across the globe. It’s graduates are among the most influential figures of their times, from the great 16th century scholar Erasmus to playwrites Oscar Wilde and Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkein to Monty Python actor Michael Palin, cooking guru, Nigella Lawson and movie-star, Hugh Grant.Critically acclaimed filmmakers, Michael Winterbottom and Ken Loach are also graduates of Oxford.
New York Film Academy students will thrive in Oxford’s atmosphere of innovation and achievement.

St. Catherine’s College
Founded in 1960, St Catherine’s is the youngest undergraduate college and one of the largest. It offers a wide range of academic study programmes with a roughly even science-arts ratio. With three Nobel Prize winners among its alumni and many Fellows with an international reputation, the college justly prides itself on its place at the cutting edge of innovation and academic research.

At the same time, low, modern buildings and restful, open green spaces give the college a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The original College buildings, designed by the Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, are a significant example of European modernist architecture. The College is the base for Oxford University’s Cameron Mackintosh Professorship in Contemporary Drama.

The annual professorship has been held by Stephen Sondheim, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Michael Codron, Sir Peter Schaffer, Arthur Miller, Lord Attenborough, Sir Richard Eyre, Thelma Holt, Diana Rigg, Nicholas Hytner, Stephen Daldry, Sir Timothy Rice. The current Professor is Patrick Marber. Student dramatic societies and clubs are a vibrant and hallowed tradition at St. Catherine’s and throughout Oxford. This will create opportunities for artistic collaboration between Film Academy students and Oxford students and a great resource for casting of our students’ films. Film Academy students will have the option of having their meals in the college’s dining hall. They will also be able to take advantage of the college’s recreational facilities (which consist of exercise equipment and of course squash courts), computer and email rooms, and the Junior Common Room which is the social center of the college.

Curriculum
In the 16mm and digital film workshops, each student writes, produces, directs, and digitally edits his or her own films, and rotates among crew positions when his or her classmates shoot.

One-Year students make eight films, working with 16mm, 24pDV, and 35mm. Four, Six, Eight-week and Evening workshops students make three to four films each.

Daily Schedule
Every workshop is full-time, with classes or shooting organized nearly every day of the week. The schedules are rigorous; however, students will have the opportunity to explore Oxford and the surrounding region.

Extra-curricular Activities
Oxford is a vibrant college town with excellent restaurants and cultural opportunities. It has a number of word class museums including The Museum of Modern Art which has an excellent reputation for its pioneering exhibition and education programmes of contemporary painting, sculpture, film, video, architecture, design and performance, together with a programme of talks and special events including live music. Students can take advantage of Oxford’s many cinemas including the repertory Phoenix Picture House which is devoted to independent films and classics of world cinema. Students may want to try their hand at punting on Oxford’s rivers. The punt is a shallow-bottomed boat propelled with the aid of a long pole, conjuring up images of Edwardian picnics.

Equipment
One-Year students shoot with Arriflex S and Arriflex SR, Panavision 35mm, and 24pDV cameras. They will record sound on DAT with shotgun and wireless microphones. And they will light with an array of Fresnel lights and accessories. Students edit digitally using Final Cut Pro on Macintosh computers. The equipment our Film Academy students use is comparable to that of the leading degree programs in the United States.

Housing
New York Film Academy can introduce students to convenient and affordable housing. Summer students have the option of living in St. Catherine’s College dormitories. Please contact: housinguk@nyfa.com for more information on finding housing at Oxford.

Enrollment
The New York Film Academy has an open enrollment. Serious students from all backgrounds are welcome to apply. No previous experience is required. However, all New York Film Academy Workshops are extremely intensive. Students who enroll should be prepared to live and breathe their work during these workshops. Given the nature of filmmaking and the necessity of working in crews, students must be willing to devote themselves not only to their own projects, but to their classmates’ projects as well. As space is limited, we recommend early application to guarantee a place in the workshop of your choice.
